05 October 2021

There have been 33 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the ACT in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday.

Of these cases, 28 are linked to known cases or ongoing clusters. Six (6) cases were in quarantine during their infectious period and 14 spent some time in the community while infectious and may present a risk of transmission to others.

There are now 649 cases who have recovered with nine (9) in the past 24 hours. This means there are now 384 active cases associated with this outbreak.

As of 9am this morning ACT Health continues to work with just under 1,600 people who have self-identified as close contacts of ACT outbreaks.

As at 8pm yesterday there were 14 patients in ACT hospitals, including five (5) in intensive care and three (3) of these cases requiring ventilation.

Sadly, the deaths that were announced yesterday in two (2) females in their 80s are included in today’s case update.

These deaths bring the number of lives lost due to COVID-19 to five (5) for this outbreak, and the total number since the start of the pandemic to eight (8).

ACT Health extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of these people at this difficult time.

More than 2,500 tests were collected across the ACT yesterday, from both Government and private providers. There were 2,909 negative test results in the 24 hours to 9am today.

Our vaccination efforts continue across the ACT with total vaccine doses administered at ACT Government Clinics now at 335,985.

We have over 400 current exposure locations listed for the ACT. Canberrans are asked to keep up to date on new locations on the ACT COVID-19 website.

Broader outbreak update

The past week has seen a large increase in the number of COVID-19 case in the ACT, with a new record number of 52 cases in a 24-hour period, which was notified two days in a row.

These larger numbers have meant that the average number of cases notified per week has increased to 132 (from 123.5).

There have now been 38 separate clusters identified since 12 August 2021.

Across the total outbreak, we have had a total of 95 people admitted across our hospitals and of these 16 have required intensive care support. Of those 16 people, eight (8) have required ventilation.

As we ease restrictions, we expect to see larger daily case numbers and we will need to accept a degree of community transmission in the ACT. This is inevitable due to the highly infectious nature of the Delta Strain combined with increased people movement across the city.

We know that when we continue to do the right thing and take the appropriate COVID safe precautions, we are able to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

So, when outside the home we continue to urge Canberrans to protect themselves and their loved ones by:

  • wearing a mask and wearing it properly
  • maintaining good hand hygiene
  • physical distancing from people outside of your household – at least 1.5 metres, and
  • checking in everywhere you go with the Check In CBR app.
