COVID-19 vaccines

Vaccination remains the best protection from serious illness and hospitalisation if you get COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccine recommendations are different for different groups of people.

To have the best protection against serious illness from COVID-19, you should get all the recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses for your age and individual health needs.

You can visit the Healthdirect website for more information on COVID-19 vaccines including eligibility criteria, the latest recommendations, and how to get your vaccination.

Primary doses

Primary doses of a vaccine are the first doses you need for protection against a disease.

Most people need 2 first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. However, some people who at higher risk of a severe illness from COVID-19, may need 3 doses.

The interval between your first doses will depend on your age and which vaccine you received.

Your doctor or immunisation provider can advise you on which vaccine you need for your primary doses and what the intervals should be based on your individual situation.

Your doctor or immunisation provider can also provide information about current recommendations for additional vaccine doses, beyond the primary doses, including if and when you should get them.
