Positive rapid antigen test results now accepted to confirm COVID-19 cases

People with a positive Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) result will no longer be required to have a PCR test at an ACT Government testing clinic to confirm that they have COVID-19.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said that this change will make it easier for Canberrans who have had a positive COVID-19 test or require testing.

“All registered users of Check In CBR have been notified of these changes via a push notification.”

Acting Minister for Health Chris Steel said that this change will save time and effort for those who return a positive RAT result, they will no longer have to queue and wait for another test result.

“This change will also reduce the pressure on our laboratories and testing clinics which should help with turnaround times for those who don’t currently have access to RAT or require a PCR test.

“RATs are becoming more available, and we know that significantly more are arriving later this month.”

ACT Health is working on a system update to allow people to register their positive RAT results within the next week.

In the meantime, people with a positive test are asked to keep a record of the date it was positive and will be asked to complete the online form when it becomes available. A further Check In CBR push notification will be sent to let people know when this is. Canberrans are encouraged to ensure that they are allowing notifications from the Check In CBR app.

People with a positive RAT result should refer to the ACT COVID-19 website to follow the instructions on what to do when they have a positive result. This includes information on isolation as a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 and who you should tell about your positive COVID-19 result.

Minister Steel said there are a number of vulnerable people within our community who may be eligible for certain treatments. This includes those who are significantly immunocompromised, pregnant or are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and aged over 55. If this applies to you, and you have had a positive RAT result, you should contact the COVID Care@Home team at Canberra Health Services. They will be able to assess your eligibility, and to ensure timely access to treatment if indicated.
