Enjoy spring with a COVID-19 mindset

With the first day of spring, more people are keen to get out in the warm weather, but the Chief Health Officer today warned against complacency.

“I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in following the health advice, which has seen us with no cases for more than 50 days, but now is not the time to be complacent,” Dr Kerryn Coleman said today.

“Physical distancing and personal hygiene will be more important than ever as we move around more, seek the sun and share playgrounds, outdoor fitness stations and BBQs. Remember that despite the encouraging position of the ACT, we do not exist in a vacuum, with people visiting from interstate and Canberrans still travelling. The situation can change quickly, both in the ACT and in our neighbouring jurisdictions.

“Please continue to take personal responsibility for your health and hygiene including washing or sanitising your hands before and after use of equipment and maintaining physical distancing from others. If facilities are busy or there is a large crowd, please consider coming back another time or finding somewhere quieter.”

General information

ACT Health reminds anyone who has been outside the ACT to monitor the health website of the jurisdiction they visited for updates on locations where confirmed cases have spent time while potentially infectious and where alerts may be in place. Please adhere to the health advice on those websites. In particular, take note of the latest areas in Queensland and NSW.

Likewise, if you intend travelling, please monitor the jurisdiction’s website. The advice on affected areas is changing regularly, so keep up to date with the latest advice. Please be mindful and aware of how easily the virus spreads.

It is everyone’s responsibility to follow the health advice and do what we can to ensure we keep ourselves and the community safe. We continue to ask Canberrans to:

  1. Avoid large crowds
  2. Keep 1.5 metres apart whenever possible
  3. Continue good hand and respiratory hygiene and
  4. Stay home if you are unwell and get tested if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.
