Jobs for Canberrans

Canberra working together

The ACT Government is working to ensure the economic survival of the ACT and surrounding regions through a comprehensive economic response to the COVID 19 pandemic.

As we increase capacity in our health system, we need to keep our city going.

To do this, we need to work together with Canberrans to create job opportunities for those that need it and support local businesses through this difficult time.

The Jobs for Canberrans Fund will provide work opportunities for people in the casual or semi-skilled workforce who have lost their jobs or have been significantly impacted due to COVID-19.

Jobs will be available for people who have relied on casual work and are not eligible for the Australian Government’s wage subsidy scheme or other support.

Roles will have minimal pre-requisites and can be undertaken in a manner that is compliant with public health directions.

The ACT Government will work with businesses, employee representatives and community services organisations to target those people most in need.

By working together, Canberra will get through this.

To be eligible to apply for roles, people must have lost their job, or have been significantly impacted as a result of COVID-19.

Roles will be made available to people most in need. Highest priority will be given to people ineligible for any Australian Government support.

Applicants will be stepped through eligibility criteria in more detail when they register.

A high number of registrations have been received since the program was announced. Registration is still open, so please sign up if you are eligible.

We will be working hard to process applications over the coming days and weeks.

If you have already registered you will continue to receive notifications as new jobs become available.

Case study:

Transport Canberra supports transport industry workers affected by COVID-19

We have already seen success in placing Canberrans stood down by their employers as a result of COVID-19. Last week Transport Canberra buses welcomed 30 people stood down from their usual roles within the wider transport industry to fill newly created cleaners’ positions.

The workers are providing additional roles as cleaners with Transport Canberra. They will play an important role in helping the ACT Government provide public transport services safely, by increasing cleaning for passengers for Canberra’s bus fleet.

The workers have been employed on temporary, casual contracts for an initial period of six months.

Since mid-March six more labour-hire cleaners have also been hired. These 36 workers will see more than 1,080 hours of cleaning undertaken on Transport Canberra buses each week.
