For businesses and venues to have 1 person per 2 square metres of usable space in both indoor and outdoor areas, they will be required to use the Check In CBR app.

Businesses and venues not using the app, will need to continue to have 1 person per 4 square metres indoors and 1 person per 2 square metres outdoors.

Check In CBR App

The Check In CBR app is a contactless, secure and convenient way for customers to sign into a Canberra venue.

The app helps protect the community by assisting with faster contact tracing. The app enables individuals to check-in to venues and have this data stored securely with ACT Health in the event contact tracing is needed due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the community.

Use of the app will help the ACT Health contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

During the COVID-19 public health emergency non-essential businesses and undertakings are required by law to ask for the first name and phone number of people who attend their venue. Use of this app enables businesses to comply with these laws.

  1. Download the Check In CBR App from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
  2. Register your details (required for the first time only).
  3. At participating venues, open the app, select ‘Check In Now’ and hover your smartphone over the displayed QR code.
  4. Add in any additional people – those who are with you without their own device or app.
  5. When the check-in is complete, show venue staff the app successful check in screen.

FAQs for customers

What is a QR code?
  • A QR code is like a barcode that can be read by a smartphone camera. A QR code consists of black and white squares, typically used for storing URLs or other information for reading by the camera on a smartphone. The Check In CBR app gives you the option of allowing your smartphone’s camera to scan the QR code when checking in. Alternatively, you can choose to manually enter the six-digit number, which is located next to the QR code on the venue QR code poster.
What happens to my information?
  • Information collected in the app goes directly to ACT Health and is stored for 28 days to assist with contact tracing (if required).
  • The privacy policy is available from within the app or on the ACT Check In CBR information website: https://www.health.act.gov.au/privacy
How long is my information stored for?
  • Information collected in the app goes directly to ACT Health and is stored for 28 days to assist with contact tracing (if required).
What if I don't want to use the app?
  • Use of the app is optional. You can still provide your contact information by other means at venues.
Should I still use the COVIDSafe App?
  • Yes.  The Check In CBR app compliments the COVIDSafe app.  The Check In CBR app is specific for customers to check in to a specific venue and have their details stored directly with ACT Health for contact tracing (if required). The COVID Safe app has a broader use and is not venue based. It is for use in other locations such as open spaces, parks and public transport.
Can I check in other people attending a business with me? 
  • The Check In CBR app provides you with the ability to check in multiple people at the same time. For example, if you were to attend a café with your family members (who don’t have devices), you could register yourself on your device and list additional people (including children) when checking in.
Is my phone compatible with the Check In CBR app?

The Check In CBR app is available on Apple iPhone, iPad and iPad touch operating iOS 10.0 or later. For Android users, the Check In CBR app is available for devices using Android 5+.

Why was an app developed vs QR code that links to a website?

QR Codes that link to websites and require people to enter their details can be exploited. For example a malicious user could print off a QR Code that directs a user to enter their details on a site with a similar look and feel.

When you use an app, the QR Codes are all recorded in the back-end of the system. If a user scans a QR Code that isn't validated in the back-end, they will receive an error message. This will then stop the user from being directed to a website that may be suspect, to provide their contact information.

Using a website also allows phishing attacks to occur, with the potential for a malicious QR Code to take the end user to a different website that may be suspect. Using the Check In CBR mobile app minimises the potential for phishing.

What's the cyber security aspects of the app?
  1. The back-end is hosted in Microsoft Azure and has undergone security testing before being made available to the public. The app itself is only available via trusted sources: the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Do I have to use the Check In CBR app to scan a Check In CBR QR code?

Yes. For security purposes the QR code functionality was built within an app. QR codes on Check In CBR posters will only work when using the app, they will not work by opening your camera to scan.

Once you have downloaded the app, it’s only a couple of steps to check-in at venues.

Do all QR codes work in the Check In CBR app?

No. Only QR codes on Check In CBR posters in participating venues will work in the Check In CBR app.

Information for businesses, venues and facilities

In line with current Public Health Directions, non-essential businesses and undertakings are required to ask all customers for their first name and phone number, and record these details along with the date and time they attended the venue.

The Check-In CBR App enables Canberra venue operators to easily comply with these Directions by enabling customers to self-check-in at venues and have their information directly stored with ACT Health for contact tracing (if required).

Once registered, a QR Code and a business starter kit (including QR Code posters) will be provided for the venue.

If any of your customers are not able to or choose not to use the Check-In CBR app, you must ensure you have an alternative check in method available to use, such as paper-based collection.

If a customer is using the Check In CBR app, on arrival you may ask them to show your staff a successful check in app screen for that venue.

QR codes for businesses

QR code posters are required for all venues using the app to enable customers to log their attendance at the venue. A different QR code is provided for each location in the ACT.

How your customers will use the Check In CBR App

  • When a customer arrives at your venue, they hover their smartphone camera over your displayed QR code.
  • Venue staff may ask customers show them a successful Check In CBR app screen.
  • The smartphone will read the code and send the customers details directly to ACT Health.

Displaying your QR code poster

Display the QR code at the entrance of your venue or another convenient location so customers can access it easily. You may want to have a staff member nearby who can assist customers and confirm they have checked in.

Print your posters in A4, in colour, and display in multiple accessible locations.

Privacy information

The information collected through the use of the QR code for your venue will go directly to ACT Health for the purpose of contact tracing and the management of QR codes during the COVID-19 pandemic response. FAQs for businesses

What is the benefit of registering my business to use the Check In CBR app?
  • Venues using the app don't need to manually collect information and don't need to store that information. The data entered into each customers app goes directly to ACT Health.
  • The registration and use of the app is free of charge.
  • Use of the app is not mandatory, however it assists in the timely delivery of contact details to ACT Health contact tracers (if required) and offers a consistent app for Canberrans regardless of which venue they attend.
How do I set up my business with a QR code?
  • You will need to register your interest on the ACT Government COVID-19 website.
  • Once registered, a QR Code and venue starter kit (including QR Code posters) will be provided for your venue.
I have multiple businesses; do I need to set up multiple codes or can I use one for all of them?
  • Yes. Each QR code is assigned to a physical address so each location/venue of a business will require a separate registration and QR code.
What are my responsibilities with customer information? 
  • The data collected goes directly to ACT Health. You won’t be collecting the customer information for those using the app.
What if my customers do not want to use the QR code? 
  • Venues will need to offer other (for example, pen and paper) options for maintaining a register of customers attending their venue for those customers not wanting to use the Check In CBR app.
How long will my customers details be stored with my business? 
  • The data collected goes directly to ACT Health. You won’t be collecting or storing the customer information for those using the app.
What if my customers experience errors using my QRcode? 
  • If the QR code doesn’t scan, the six-digit number located on the QR code poster at your venue can be entered manually into the app instead. If there are still problems, you will need to manually register the customer details.
Do I still need a COVID Safety Plan if I have the QR code for customers? 
  • Yes, you are still required to have a COVID Safety Plan as maintaining a register of customers is only one aspect of the Plan
